Aquamarine "The Gem of The Sea"

Aquamarine is a stunning gemstone that has captivated people for centuries with its mesmerizing blue hues. It is the birthstone for the month of March and is also known as the "gem of the sea" due to its resemblance to the sparkling waters of the ocean. This beautiful gemstone has a rich history and is highly valued for its lustrous colour and properties.

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin words "aqua" meaning water and "marina" meaning sea. This gemstone belongs to the beryl family, which also includes emerald and morganite. It is found in various shades of blue, ranging from pale blue to deep blue-green. The most valuable and sought-after color is a deep blue with a hint of green, often referred to as "Santa Maria" blue. Aquamarine is also known for its clarity, with few inclusions and a high level of transparency. Today, aquamarine is still associated with the sea and is often worn by those who have a deep love for the ocean.

This gem is found in various locations around the world, including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Mozambique, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. However, the most significant sources of aquamarine are Brazil and Madagascar.

Aquamarine is often used as an anniversary stone to celebrate 19 years of marriage. Durability is an important factor to consider when choosing a gemstone for everyday wear, and aquamarine is a great option for this. It has a hardness of 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale, which measures a mineral's resistance to scratching. This makes it a relatively durable gemstone that can withstand daily wear and tear.

In addition to its hardness, this gem also has good toughness, meaning it is resistant to chipping and breaking. This is due to its crystal structure, which allows it to withstand impact and pressure without easily fracturing. However, like all gemstones, it is not completely indestructible and can still be damaged if subjected to extreme force or pressure.

Vandenbergs showcases a few luxury aquamarine and diamond pieces and we also offer our customers the ability to order in a more specific style as well as our popular custom design option. Browse our in-stock styles right here on our website! Browse Here!
