From Antique Find to One of a Kind
Some pieces begin with a moment. Others evolve over time.
At Vandenbergs, many of the most meaningful designs do not start in a showroom. They begin with a discovery, a feeling, or a piece that simply speaks to you.
For Vickie, who runs our watch department and curates a collection of vintage treasures, inspiration is something she is constantly searching for. Whether she is attending antique shows or sourcing unique finds, she is always looking for pieces with potential.
A few years ago, she came across a simple strand of dyed sapphires in an antique shop. It was not a finished design. Just stones on a string. But she saw something more.She brought it back to the studio and reimagined it into a modern lariat necklace. Effortless, elegant, and entirely her own. It quickly became one of her favourite pieces, something she wore often and connected with over time.
Until one day, it sold right off her neck.
It is something we see often. When a piece is truly special, someone else feels it too.
Even after it found a new home, the design stayed with her.
So she began again.
Determined to recreate that feeling, Vickie sourced new strands of emerald, sapphire, and ruby. But like many creative processes, it did not go exactly as planned. The stones that arrived were not what she expected. After reaching out and working with the supplier, she was able to receive better replacements that matched her vision.
And from that, something new began to take shape.
The piece she is wearing now is the result of that journey. A ruby lariat set, thoughtfully designed and handmade by Vickie herself. Rich in colour, fluid in movement, and completely one of a kind.
And the story does not end here.
She is already working on her next design. A sapphire lariat featuring a front-facing toggle and a large baroque pearl. A new interpretation, built from experience and inspiration.
This is what makes jewellery truly meaningful. Not just how it looks, but how it comes to life.
